I know first-hand the greatness and warmth of Latinos, therefore, I am disheartened when I see my fellow-Latinos performing below their potential. Yes, we are highly successful and respected botanists, journalists, astronauts, grocery store owners, educators, and politicians. Yet a number of Latinos, regardless of educational level and financial class, prefer to place the blame for our problems on other cultural groups or the system; thus avoiding accountability. Just four decades ago, Latinos were a tight-knit and self-sufficient cultural group in the U.S. So what perplexes me today is: why are Latinos not more self-reliant as a community? And are the Latinos who have left their communities and "made it" returning to their former neighborhoods to empower those left behind?
